COMMON QUESTIONS ASKED BY PARENTS
Which program or school is right for my child?
Although not required by most programs, we highly recommend parents enlist the help of a professional referral agent, such as a member of the INDEPENDENT EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT ASSOCIATION. These professionals have extensive knowledge of special needs programs and schools throughout the country, and can recommend the most appropriate placement options.
If you choose to place your child in a program/school without assistance, we suggest you research the schools carefully and strongly recommend you visit the school in person.
Can I visit Waterfall Canyon Academy before my child is enrolled?
Waterfall Canyon Academy welcomes visits from parents of prospective students. To arrange a visit, please contact our Admissions Director Karen Nickel at (801) 301-4976 or Karen@waterfallcanyon.com
How will my child be transported to Waterfall Canyon Academy?
This question is best answered on a case-by-case basis. We prefer parents bring the student to the home. However, if this is not in the best interest of the family or child, we will arrange to meet the family at their home and bring the student back with us.
How long will my child be at Waterfall Canyon Academy?
Parents should plan on a time frame of twelve to eighteen months of enrollment. Our students benefit from repetition of newly learned skills and consistent behavioral interventions. Removing a student before he has actually implemented true changes generally results in a return to self-destructive behavior patterns. Parental support of treatment and willingness to implement behavioral strategies in the home, will reduce the amount of time needed for the changes to occur.
How often can I call or write my child?
- Unlimited letters to and from the student (US mail and e-mail)
- Students have two 15 minutes outgoing telephone calls each week
- Parents may call the student for two 15 minutes phone calls, at designated times each week
- Parents may call anytime and speak with a designated program representative
When will I be able to visit my child?
Parents may visit their child at any time. Visits must be coordinated with the primary therapist and program director. During the first 30 days, visitation can only take place on campus. After 30 days, parents may take their child off-campus upon approval of the clinical team. Home visits will be therapeutic in nature and will require the approval and coordination of the primary therapist.
How can I keep track of my child's academic progress?
Academic progress reports are completed by our teachers at OakGrove School. Waterfall Canyon Academy/OakGrove School will keep parents informed of educational progress through e-mail and/or phone calls. Educational progress will often be discussed in the weekly family therapy sessions as well. Parents will also have access to an online system that is consistently updated with our students academic progress.
How will my child's medical and dental needs be met?
Students should have physical and dental examinations completed just prior to entering the program. Waterfall Canyon Academy will arrange for necessary medical and dental treatment through local providers, utilizing parent's insurance whenever possible. Of course, all medical and dental emergencies will be addressed immediately through the appropriate provider.
